Bulk Tanker vs Drum Supply: Choosing a Solvent Delivery Model
SUPPLY CHAIN 28 July 2026 6 min read

Once a plant passes a certain monthly volume, the question stops being which solvent to buy and becomes how to receive it. The answer changes your landed cost, your storage capital and how much handling labour you carry every week.

What each model actually involves

Drum supply

Solvent arrives in sealed 200 litre drums, typically on pallets. There is no capital outlay, each drum carries its own batch identity, and you can hold several different solvents without dedicating tankage to any of them. Against that, you handle every drum, you pay for the packaging in the price, and you accumulate empties that must be stored and disposed of responsibly.

Bulk road tanker supply

Solvent is delivered by dedicated road tanker and pumped straight into your storage tank. The cost per litre falls because you are no longer paying for drums, handling drops to almost nothing, and a single delivery can replace dozens of drum movements. In exchange you commit to tankage, bunding, transfer pumps, level instrumentation and the safety systems around them, and you commit that tank to one product.

Landed cost is not the drum price

Comparing a per-litre drum price against a per-litre bulk price understates the gap. The real comparison has to include the handling labour to move and decant drums, the floor space they occupy, product left behind as drum heel, the cost of managing empties, and the working capital tied up in the safety stock that drum ordering usually forces you to hold.

Bulk supply carries its own hidden line items, chiefly the depreciation on tankage and bunding, tank cleaning when you change product, and the discipline of scheduling deliveries so you never run the tank dry mid-shift.

The hybrid model most plants land on

In practice the majority of mid-sized manufacturers end up running both. The one or two solvents consumed in genuine volume, often NC thinner, toluene or mixed xylene, move to bulk where the economics are clearest. Everything else, including specialty and low-volume materials such as acetonitrile or THF, continues to arrive in drums where flexibility and batch identity matter more than a few rupees a litre.

That split usually captures most of the available saving without committing tankage to a product whose consumption might change next year.

Questions worth asking any supplier

  • Can you supply the same specification in both drums and bulk, so quality does not shift when we switch model?
  • Is a batch certificate of analysis issued with every delivery, including tanker loads?
  • What is the realistic lead time for a tanker, and what happens on an urgent call-off?
  • Are your tankers dedicated, or do they carry other products between loads?
  • Can you hold buffer stock locally so we are not exposed to a single long-haul delivery?

That last point is where a regional distributor earns its place. Holding stock in Bengaluru rather than shipping every order from a distant plant is the difference between a same-week call-off and a production stoppage.

Key takeaway

Compare landed cost rather than drum price, and be honest about how steady your consumption really is. Most plants get the best result by moving their top one or two solvents to bulk and keeping everything else in drums.
